  1. Gain admission to a Canadian university 

This is the first and most important step. One mandatory document you’ll need when applying for a Canada study visa is a letter of acceptance from a Canadian school. This  shows that you’ve been admitted into a Canadian school for studies. It also shows the duration of your study.

      2. Find out whether you need a study visa or not

It is possible to study in Canada without a study visa. But that’s for specific circumstances. You have to find out if you are in a circumstance that requires a study visa or not. One situation where you would not need a study visa is when you enrol in a short-term program that will last for six months or less.

Note that if you intend to apply for permanent residency, a six-month program will not allow you to apply for a work permit. You’re better off applying for a one or two years program. 

The application timeline for a Canada study visa

  • Complete the application form

You’ll be required to provide your personal details, information about the institution and program of study, details about your background and qualifications, and other documents.  

  • Submit required documents 
  • Pay the application fee

  • Attend a visa interview 
  • Wait for the decision 
  • Have your study visa approved 

Canada study visa requirement

The following are needed to apply for a Canadian study visa;

  1. Letter of acceptance 

To apply for a study visa in Canada, students must first be accepted by a  Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and have received a letter of acceptance from the institution. Students should also have the educational background and qualifications to pursue their chosen program of study. The letter must include details like the program start date, the length of the program, and any conditions of acceptance.

      2. Proof of funds

One important requirement for getting a Canadian study visa is proof of funds. Students must demonstrate that they have enough money to cover their tuition fees and living expenses while studying in Canada. The amount of money required varies depending on the program’s length and the institution’s location. Proof of funds may include bank statements, scholarship or sponsorship letters, or a letter from a financial institution indicating that you can access the necessary funds.

      3. Language proficiency

English and French are the two official languages in Canada. Students must be proficient in one of them and be proven by a language test like the IELTS or TOEFL for English proficiency or the TEF for French proficiency. The required scores for language proficiency vary depending on the program and institution.

      4. Passport and photographs

Applicants must provide a valid passport and recent photographs for identification purposes.

      5. Medical exam results

In some cases, obtaining a study visa requires students to undergo a medical exam and provide the results as proof of sound health.

      6. Additional Documents

Depending on the specific circumstances, additional documents like a police clearance certificate or a letter of explanation for any gaps in education or employment history may be required as part of the requirements for getting a Canadian study visa. 

Note that all documents must be in either English or French or accompanied by a certified translation.
