Australia is a land of opportunities, and people immigrate for a variety of reasons. 

According to the Australian Government’s Immigration and Citizenship website, there are several reasons to apply for an Australian visa, including:

  • To visit family and friends
  • For tourism and recreation
  • For business activities
  • For medical treatment
  • For short-term study
  • For other short-term, non-work purposes

Types of Australian Visas

Immigrating to Australia for any reason requires a valid visa. Australia offers a range of visas to suit different purposes, from tourist and business visas to student and work visas. The type of visa you need will depend on the length of your stay, your nationality, and your reason for visiting.

There are several types of visas available, each with its own requirements and conditions. They include: 

     1. Visitor Visas

Travelling to Australia for a holiday, visiting family or friends, or for business purposes requires you to have an Australian visitor visa. There are several subclasses of visitor visas, including subclass 600, which allows you to stay in Australia for up to 12 months, to visit family or friends, or for business purposes.

Other subclasses of visitor visas include subclass 601, which allows you to visit Australia for up to 3 months for business purposes, and subclass 651, which allows you to visit Australia for up to 3 months for tourism or business purposes.

     2. Student Visas

Studying in Australia requires that you have an Australian Student Visa. The subclass 500 visa is the most common type of Australian student visa and allows you to study in Australia for up to 5 years. To be eligible for a student visa in Australia, you’ll need to have been accepted into a registered course of study and have proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses while in Australia.

     3. Work Visas

To work in Australia, you’ll need to apply for an Australian work visa. There are different subclasses of work visas in Australia, including subclass 482, which allows you to work in Australia for up to 4 years, and subclass 186, which allows you to work in Australia permanently. 

To be eligible for a work visa, you must have a job offer from an Australian employer and meet other eligibility criteria, like having the necessary skills and qualifications for the job.

     4. Family Visas

If you have family members like your spouse, parent, sibling or child who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible for a family visa. There are several subclasses of family visas, including subclass 820, which allows you to live and work in Australia temporarily while waiting for a decision on your permanent resident visa application.

     5. Temporary Work Visas

If you want to work temporarily in Australia, you can apply for a temporary work visa. The Australian temporary work visa allows you to work in Australia for up to four years. There are different types of temporary work visas available, including:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482)
  • Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa (subclass 403)
  • Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457)

Each visa has specific eligibility criteria, and you must meet the requirements to apply.

     6. Permanent Resident Visas

If you plan to live in Australia permanently, you can apply for a permanent resident visa. The permanent resident visa allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely and enjoy all the benefits of being an Australian citizen, except for the right to vote. 

     7. Travel Visas

If you plan to visit Australia for tourism, you can apply for a travel visa. The travel visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to three months.

Requirements for Australian Visa Application

Applying for an Australian visa requires you to meet certain requirements. These requirements vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. However, there are general requirements that apply to all visa types. To apply for an Australian visa, you must meet the following general requirements:

  • You must have a valid passport that will remain valid for the duration of your stay in Australia

  • You must be of good character and meet the character requirements set by the Australian government
  • You must be in good health and meet the health requirements set by the Australian government
  • You must have a genuine reason for visiting Australia and intend to leave the country at the end of your stay
